Active release therapy (ART) is a type of soft tissue therapy that focuses on relieving tension in your tissues by removing adhesions that may occur from repetitive motion. ART is a symptomatic treatment addressing the muscles, ligaments, and other tissues in the musculoskeletal system in three ways:
- Restore range of motion in the tissues
- Release trapped nerves
- Reestablish optimum function in the tissues, focusing on texture and resilience
How Is Active Release Therapy Performed?
Active release therapy is a non-invasive, hands-on treatment. It combines the application of deep pressure to the affected area while the patient moves the injured area as directed by their chiropractor.
Additionally, it is recommended that patients follow a post-treatment exercise program to improve recovery and rehabilitation and prevent a relapse. This exercise program should address four key areas:
- Flexibility
- Strength
- Balance and spatial awareness
- Cardiovascular health
At Strong & Active Chiropractic serving Del Mar, CA, Chiro Mitch is fully certified in active release technique and certified as a strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA. Chiro Mitch is passionate about personal training and active release therapy, operating his own business providing ART for seven years before going back to school to become a chiropractor.
Benefits of Active Release Therapy
If you are an athlete, ART offers several benefits that will allow you to continue participating in your preferred sports. ART helps manage and treat sports injuries like shin splints and tennis elbow while improving your range of motion and flexibility, contributing to overall athletic performance.
ART helps improve your quality of life because, by being able to move without pain, you can get out to meet with people and do the things you love.
ART, when used correctly, can help relieve symptoms of whiplash and tingling in the extremities. By breaking up the scar tissue, you will receive increased blood flow to your affected area, contributing to your overall healing.
